With a little planning on my part I was able to keep the boys entertained during the long car rides with DVDs, snacks, audio books, dollar store surprise toys and a few other goodies. We also planned a lot of breaks and stopovers. I discovered that my boys were very good travellers.
To cut down on costs and our impact on the environment, we never drove over 110 km/hr. If we did we found our mileage to be that much worse. We also camped and stayed with friends or family for the most part. There were only 3 of 14 nights when we did stay in a hotel. As for meals, instead of eating out all the time, we'd go to the local grocery store, buy some healthy food and take it to a park so the boys could run around instead of being cooped up in a restaurant. It worked out very well that way and we found some awesome parks along the way. (The one in Grand Forks, BC stood out for our family!)
