Cluck, Cluck Chicken Truck

The process of adding chickens to our 1 acre property is moving along a bit faster than I would like. Although I love the thought of having fresh eggs, I could do without everything that comes with them.

We have talked to our local "chicken lady" and have been told that with children our age it's best not to get chicks but chickens that are ready to lay. She just happens to have some Neras the perfect age. They aren't the Barred Rocks that we originally planned on getting but she'll throw in a few older Barred Rocks to keep the young laying hens calmer. Hmm, calmer...that sounds ominous. Am I going to be chasing chickens and children throughout the property? And now we are getting 4 hens as opposed to 2. How did that happen?

I wonder if Hens get cranky in their old age?
