Poutine

I have been on the hunt for the best Poutine.  That devilish yet delicious dish of french fries, topped with cheese curds and smothered in gravy.  Despite my healthy diet, this is the one item I splurge on (ok there are many but this is the only one I'm focusing on today).  My girlfriend who now lives in Ottawa, introduced me to poutine many years ago (over 25) as we were travelling to her place in Mt. Tremblant Quebec.  Quebec is the birthplace of poutine so I was introduced to the real deal.  I blame her for this post because ever since, I have needed the occasional (ok, not so occasional) fix of poutine. Click "read more" below.

Until recently I thought the fry place in the mall had the best poutine.  Fantastic fries, great portion size and yummy gravy - along with real cheese curds not some cheap substitute like grated cheddar.  Yuck.  But I recently discovered a little variation on poutine that is just delish!  It is located right up the street from me, which is very dangerous! The place is called the Bavarian Sausage House and they specialize in, yes you guessed it, sausages. When the deep fryer is up and running (and it hasn't been the last two times I've been there!) they make the best poutine I've had in these parts.  It is topped with gravy, curds and salsa.  Although a bit of a deviation from the traditional salsa, it gives the poutine a little tang and and I like to tell myself it's healthier for me. I get my husband to bring me some home every time he makes a trip to buy sausages.

So if you have any other recommendations for best poutine, where ever you may be, let me know.  I may just have to make a trip to test it myself.
