The Shanty Town or Not the Shanty Town.

A friend came by today and said, "Nice laundry line. Looks like a shanty town." I was speechless. I felt a talk about environmentalism and the benefits of a laundry line would probably be lost on this person so I must vent about it here.

Does he live under that rock I keep talking about. Or in a cave perhaps where a laundry line may not work. Not only does it save us a lot of $$ over a summer but it saves energy and bleaches out my whites and makes everything smell great. It's environmentally friendly!

Granted, we are not the majority but a lot of people have moved towards doing it and it's not an uncommon site in this neck of the woods. Amazing, that it still has the image of "shanty town" and not "green conscious." When I go to friends places for the first time and see the laundry line I think "good for them". Plus it's just so cute seeing a tiny pair of white baby socks beside my husbands huge work socks.

Ok so I must be honest, there was a time when I thought..."shanty town" when I saw clothes swinging in the breeze. But over the years of living on our acreage I've found it only makes sense to have a laundry line. It fits into our values and lifestyles and anything else would be ridiculous at this point. I suppose I should have educated our visitor and maybe I could have converted him to the "shanty town" way of life.

  1. Clotheslines are great...I actually like seeing clothes hanging out on the line. It's crazy that they're banned in many communities for aesthetic reasons, even though they're so much better for the environment.
