Somewhere in between.

So I was called a hippy today for the first time in my life. I went through a hippy stage in high school and university when my best friends parents were true hippies and her influence definitely rubbed off on me. I thought it was a romantic life but really it all came down to fashion. I liked the tie die look, the long hair and flowy clothes.

Today I eat organic. I have an acreage with a vegetable/fruit garden and fruit trees. I have a laundry line with my clothes swaying in the breeze. But would I call myself a hippy? No! I think of hippies as peace loving, do with little, smoke pot and have sex every day kind of people. I'm a mother of two kids. I can't remember the last time I had sex. I'm not the true hippy of the 60s. Peace, love and happiness to all.

But perhaps I do represent the modern day hippy to some. Most of it is my husband's influence. I just thought we were environmentally conscious. I still think that. But perhaps it helps the non environmentally conscious to feel better about how they live their lives if they write us off as Hippies. I know some hippies and we are definitely not hippies. I think we're probably somewhere in between. But then hasn't that always been my lot in life - somewhere in between.

I love the big city. I love shopping for clothes. I love art, the theatre and trying new things and having new experiences. I love to travel. I love my stuff. But then I also love the country. I love the little things like smelling a fire burning, fresh cut grass and the ocean. I sometimes think living on a boat would be fantastic but then what would I do with all my stuff. I love a small town where you see the same person three times in one day by accident. At one point in my life I didn't know if I wanted to climb the corporate ladder and be a CEO of some hotshot company or move to the Islands and live in a converted school bus and working here and there when and where I could find a job. It was really a dilemma for me.

So now I think I'm somewhere in between the hippy and the urbanite... and as a middle child that is quite fitting.
