We are looking after the neighbours house, property and pets while they are away. This is what neighbours do in the country. In the city you barely know your neighbours. At least that was how it was when I lived in the city.
We lived in a couple of different condos in Vancouver. In the 3 floor building, we'd have the occasional polite conversation while in the elevator or when meeting someone by chance at the entrance to the building but that was about the extent of it. In the 24 floor condo I didn't know anyone and didn't talk to anyone because I rarely saw anyone. It was strange. In the country you have conversations with everyone. That goes with small towns as well because inevitably you know them or know someone who knows them or have heard of them or your kids are connected to their kids one way or the other.
I find I have to remind myself sometimes to be more friendly than usual when I'm out and about running errands. I still get surprised at times when someone I don't know starts a conversation with me. "Oh, right", I say to myself "I'm not in the big city anymore." I am learning to be more open, relaxed and a little less busy while I'm out and about being busy. And now I'm off to feed the neighbours cat.
