Apps for French Immersion Families

I have had a hard time finding apps that would support my children who are being educated in the French Immersion system. Where are all those French versions of some awesome English educational apps? I scoured the World Wide Web for what looked like some great apps for my kids. Here are 5 that I would recommend. I even have a little something for teachers of Early French Immersion.

StoryKit
Free

I just heard about this app. A friend of mine was using it but I hadn't thought of the idea of using it in French - even better.  The app allows you and or your child to build a story.  They take photos or draw and take a photo of their drawings, or you can draw on the screen. Sounds can be added and it's very user friendly.  The preferred language can be chosen so on that long vacation or car ride, French will remain top of mind as your child creates his/her story book.  Very cool idea and as I have a child who has a hard time with mornings.  I think we may need to create a story book on how his morning is going to go before school.  Hopefully he'll help him with the transition.  He will also be able to use his vast imagination to build a fun story book of his own.  Staring himself! Very cool and can't wait to try it.

French Verbs
Free

This is like having a verb conjugation tool at your fingertips.  Type in the verb and the tense you want and presto, your child can check his conjugation savvy.  Best for older children as they learn their conjugations.

Quizlet
Free

I've just discovered this app and downloaded it immediately for testing.  I was just told that I needed to use flashcards with my 6 year old to help him learn letter sounds and combination letter sounds.  How perfect this app is.  You can make up your own flash cards or use ones already in the database.  And it comes in a variety of languages.  Wish I had this when I was studying.

1K French
$0.99

Use this app to learn the top 1000 used French words.  Once your child knows how to read the word, click on the smiley face and move it to the "known" category.  They'll still get quizzed on the "unknown" category and more words will open up for your child the more words they know.

MindSnacks
Free

If flashcards aren't your child's thing, then try out this app.  Mindsnacks offers nine games designed to learn vocabulary and conversational skills. Each lesson offers up to 25 words and is personalized for your child's learning.

Teacher Resource

If you are a teacher and want to find out more ways to use the iPad in your classroom, check out this blog by Grade 1 French Immersion teache Kate Lechleiter. She's got some great practical ideas to make the most out of digital learning!

Enjoy these apps and let me know if you like them by commenting on this post.  Feel free to recommend more apps and share the wealth of French learning.

A Bientôt!
